Funeral Ministry

Become a comforting presence to our parishioners and their families during their time of grieving. If you have experienced a loss you know the importance of having the support of others around you. The presence of the faith community is such a source of consolation for the family members.

We are looking for parishioners who would be able to attend the wake service with the Priest or Pastoral Associate. Wake services last about 20 to 30 minutes. This would be an opportunity to offer our sympathies and promise of prayer to the families on behalf of SHC. Team members could do one of the readings or the prayer of the faithful, or could be a quiet presence. Team members would need to have a flexible schedule and be available with a minimum of notice. If this is not a possibility for you, you could attend the Mass of Christian Burial. Team members serve as greeters, welcoming people to our parish, offering our sympathies, directing them to the coat closet, to rest rooms, and to the church. All these are simple signs of our hospitality and so greatly appreciated. Team members would need to be free during daytime.

If you are not able to be physically present, you can serve in this ministry by writing a note on behalf of the parish to the family a month or two after the funeral. Cards and script would be available.
