Tour de Tribury XVI September 20, 2008
The Southbury Faith In Action Committee (Formerly Southbury Interfaith Social Concerns Committee) again sponsored this year's Tour de Tribury Bike and Walk-A-Thon, the sixteenth year for the Tour. As before, the proceeds from the event went to support the Southbury Fuel Bank, an organization that helps residents of Southbury keep their homes warm throughout the winter season. Our thanks go out to the sponsors of the event, the riders, and the Knights of Columbus for their world famous Hot Dogs, and the many volunteers who made the day a success. These pictures show but a small part of the day. The day was made for a bike ride. Cool, bright sun, just perfect.
Looks like it's official. The poster and brochures are ready. All we need now are a few hardy souls ready and able to help out a neighbor in need. I think we won't have to wait too long.
And I was right. Early in the morning, with the mists still hanging in the valleys, those long distance folk start to arrive. And sign in, of course. After all, we have to know who's here.
Joe was there to thank everyone for their support, and to explain the routes, answer any questions, and send everyone on their way. What a great day for a ride in the country, a little over 50 miles, then back at Sacred Heart for lunch.
Reverend Bryan Sims, Pastor of Southbury Baptist Church was on hand to offer a blessing for the riders.
Rev. Sims, was also among those who offered their thoughts on the day. You can hear his thoughts, and many others by clicking here to be brought to those recordings.
Soon after the 50 milers left on their ride, the 25 mile folk started to arrive. And as so often happens, things don't always go according to plan. But fortunately, it was not as bad as it looks, and the repairs were soon made, and the bike and rider were set to go.
Part of the 25 mile crew
And a colorful group they are. Lots of bright colors, to match the bright and cheery people out to help others.
Slightly larger than the 50 mile group, the 25 mile riders get their introduction to the route, and questions answered.
Pastor Sims joined us again to thank the riders for their good work, and to pray that they have a safe and blessed trip.
Relatively smaller this year than in past years, the 10 mile group was still the largest of the ride groups. What a beautiful day for a ride along the river. Crisp, clear, and cool. Perfect New England weather.
Walkers at the ready. OK, so they aren't quite walkers yet. Just give them enough time, and they'll qualify. In the mean time, It's up to grandma and grandpa to provide the motive force to get going.
Fr. Vladimir Aleandro, of Christ The Savior Orthodox Church was good enough to offer the blessing for the walkers.
And here they are, including Fr. Aleandro, ready for a short stroll down the sidewalks of Southbury.
As usual, the Knights of Columbus provided the food for the riders and walkers. Their world famous hot dogs, chips, sodas, and general snacks were very appreciated. Also appreciated was the work of the Columbettes, who staffed all the water stops for the riders this year. Many thanks to both groups for a job well done.
Where would we be without our sponsors? Without their support, this event simply wouldn't happen. Please keep them in mind if you find yourself in need of their services.
And so another year closes on the Tour de Tribury. And next week, the planning committee will meet for one last time to review the program, and start planning for next year. If you would be interested in helping plan this wonderful event, drop an e-mail. See You Then!!
