“My Jesus, my Savior, Lord there is none like you. All of my days, I want to praise the wonders of Your mighty love.”
These lyrics will sound familiar if you’ve been attending the ROC (Rely on Christ) Mass on the first Saturday of the month 5pm Vigil Mass. This monthly electric liturgy was created through the work of the Evangelization Team (Strategic Plan) and Faith Formation department to appeal to the teen and young adult population of our parish. But, truth be told, the music and youth presence engages and energizes every age in attendance!
It features a five piece rock band and vocal group, lead by music director Patty Richards, that raises the roof of the sanctuary and the spirits of the participants through Christian rock selections and amped up Mass parts. Teens and young adults are also featured in liturgical roles: readers of The Word and the Prayer of the Faithful, ushers, greeters, presenters of the gifts and cross bearers. Homilies that speak to the hearts and circumstances of young people offer relatable interpretations of the Good News.
Volunteers are needed and welcome to assist with the many components involved in this ministry. Leaders of the ROC Youth Group need assistance in the 30 minute duration after gatherings that feature bi-monthly sandwich making for Brass City Harvest and Saint Vincent de Paul charities in Waterbury; receptions for special events like the High School Grad Mass and the Confirmation Rite of Calling. Teens and young adults can sign up for any of the roles (see sidebar) but are welcomed most importantly as regular participants in this form of outreach to them. Young people are our future, our hope and a vital part of the Sacred Heart community of disciples.
